Mentoring and Internship Scheme Offers Exciting Opportunities for Members

Published 8th March 2018 under Business News  &   Local News

We have an exciting opportunity which will connect our members with the next generation of business leaders thanks to a partnership with Wensleydale School and Sixth Form in Leyburn.

We are looking for mentors and internship providers who we can match with students who are keen to pursue a vocational business route, over the more conventional Post 16 study options after their GCSEs this summer.

This follows the announcement last November of the Lower Wensleydale Business Network partnership with the new Wensleydale School and Sixth Form Business and Innovation Centre, which will be fully operational from September, and offers students an opportunity to combine practical business skills with vocational and academic study. The mentorship and internship scheme will be open to students who pick this new study route.

The challenges around attracting young professionals and their families to the Wensleydale area along with the low retention rate of young people, are well known. This scheme provides an ideal opportunity for Wensleydale businesses to contribute towards changing these concerning issues.

Benefits of the Mentorship and Internship Scheme

  • Provide career opportunities for our talented young people and help to retain them in the area.
  • Gives you access to local young talent for future recruitment.
  • Allow you to have a unique opportunity to evaluate and support a prospective employee.
  • Help solve the wider and long-term business challenges facing the region.
  • Gain a fresh perspective on your business through the eyes of your mentee.
  • You will find it a rewarding experience.

What it will involve?

What we ask is that you as local business leaders will:

  • Make a commitment to a 16-year-old student for two years.
  • Meet regularly with them and help them understand the skills employers look for.
  • Help prepare them for the world of work.
  • Create opportunities for them to gain a first-hand insight into their chosen career.

Next steps

  • If you are interested, please get in touch stating clearly what business field you work in.
  • We will then contact you to talk through the scheme in more detail.
  • You will then be matched with a student who has chosen a career path in your field or similar.
  • You will have the opportunity to meet your student before the summer.
  • The scheme will officially start in September 2018.

If you choose to take part in the scheme you will be provided with a mentor pack which will provide guidance on how to get the best out of your relationship with your student. To find out more email us or call 07779 378641.
